Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER - John Grisham takes you to a different kind of court in his first basketball novel。 Samuel "Sooley" Sooleymon is a raw, young talent with big hoop dreams--and even bigger challenges off the court。

"Hard to put down 。。。 the pages turn quickly 。。。 building to a climax that won't leave readers doubting whether this is a John Grisham novel。" --Associated Press

In the summer of his seventeenth year, Samuel Sooleymon gets the chance of a lifetime: a trip to the United States with his South Sudanese teammates to play in a showcase basketball tournament。 He has never been away from home, nor has he ever been on an airplane。 The opportunity to be scouted by dozens of college coaches is a dream come true。

Samuel is an amazing athlete, with speed, quickness, and an astonishing vertical leap。 The rest of his game, though, needs work, and the American coaches are less than impressed。

During the tournament, Samuel receives devastating news from home: A civil war is raging across South Sudan, and rebel troops have ransacked his village。 His father is dead, his sister is missing, and his mother and two younger brothers are in a refugee camp。

Samuel desperately wants to go home, but it's just not possible。 Partly out of sympathy, the coach of North Carolina Central offers him a scholarship。 Samuel moves to Durham, enrolls in classes, joins the team, and prepares to sit out his freshman season。 There is plenty of more mature talent and he isn't immediately needed。

But Samuel has something no other player has: a fierce determination to succeed so he can bring his family to America。 He works tirelessly on his game, shooting baskets every morning at dawn by himself in the gym, and soon he's dominating everyone in practice。 With the Central team losing and suffering injury after injury, Sooley, as he is nicknamed, is called off the bench。 And the legend begins。

But how far can Sooley take his team? And will success allow him to save his family?

Gripping and moving, Sooley showcases John Grisham's unparalleled storytelling powers in a whole new light。 This is Grisham at the top of his game。

Loved this book, although I am not a basketball fan。 An excellent, well written story。

Terrific sports novel。 Great play-by-play action scenes combines with the devastating and heartbreaking descriptions of war-torn Sudan and refugee camps。 I loved the characters in this book。 Highly recommend!

Kerry

Such a disappointment for a John Grisham book。 This book read more like a YA novel than a book by one of my favorite authors。

I loved this book。 I’mNot a big basketball fan but I really appreciated this story development, I really had empathy for the main character, made me appreciate how good we have it in North America。 A surprise twist at the end。 I read this book on vacation in 4 days。

Sooley is the nickname of a South Sudanese basketball player who has a dream of playing in America。 He is chosen for a team and taken to the US where he does well。 His family is back in S Sudan and ends up in a refugee camp。 Sooley hopes to eventually bring them out of the camp and to American。 It's a story of heartache and triumph。 The story doesn't go the way you hope it should, but has a satisfactory conclusion。 Sooley is the nickname of a South Sudanese basketball player who has a dream of playing in America。 He is chosen for a team and taken to the US where he does well。 His family is back in S Sudan and ends up in a refugee camp。 Sooley hopes to eventually bring them out of the camp and to American。 It's a story of heartache and triumph。 The story doesn't go the way you hope it should, but has a satisfactory conclusion。 。。。more

this was such a well written book!! It was a bit heavy on the basketball, but to describe a game in an engaging and interesting way through words is so impressive。 I was definitely not expecting the ending。 I feel like this book could have been much much longer but the author chose to be concise and in the end I think I do appreciate that。 I understand why there was so much hype around this book now。 I was definitely not expecting to like a basketball book so much。 The story was just so sad but this was such a well written book!! I have read nearly all of John Grishams books, but this book has got to be in my top 3 of his。 I was reluctant on reading this one because I'm not a huge basketball fan, but wanted to take a break from what I've been reading。 I am so glad I did。 There are not many books that I finish reading and think, "wow, that was a really good story。" If you were second guessing reading this one, take the chance on it。 You won't be disappointed。 I have read nearly all of John Grishams books, but this book has got to be in my top 3 of his。 I was reluctant on reading this one because I'm not a huge basketball fan, but wanted to take a break from what I've been reading。 I am so glad I did。 There are not many books that I finish reading and think, "wow, that was a really good story。" If you were second guessing reading this one, take the chance on it。 You won't be disappointed。 。。。more

Great story This is another great story told by an excellent story teller。 The characters are well developed and believable。 The plot is well developed and fun to follow。 This is a fascinating book and definitely shows that Grisham doesn’t need a courtroom to work his magic。 I definitely recommend this book。

Initially I enjoyed this book, it was mostly engaging and seemed to be a hopeful story, but I hated the ending so much that I couldn't rate it over 2 stars。 Initially I enjoyed this book, it was mostly engaging and seemed to be a hopeful story, but I hated the ending so much that I couldn't rate it over 2 stars。 。。。more

Too much basketball

I really enjoyed this book。 It is not a typical Grisham - not at all about the law。 It is a book mostly about NCAA basketball and Sudan。 It was a great read especially after the year that the St。 Peter's Peacocks had in March Madness。 This was a 4。25 star book for me。 I really enjoyed this book。 It is not a typical Grisham - not at all about the law。 It is a book mostly about NCAA basketball and Sudan。 It was a great read especially after the year that the St。 Peter's Peacocks had in March Madness。 This was a 4。25 star book for me。 。。。more

A wonderful story of a young Sudanese boy whose basketball skills gained him notice and a trip to America where he qualified for a college basketball team。The story fast pace, keeping readers up-to-date with what happens with his family back in Sudan and his developing basketball skills on the court in America。 I found the story wonderful。。。until 5/6 through。 The ending was not really needed and would have been so much sweeter stopping at the 5/6 point。Even still。。。worth the read。 Well written。 A wonderful story of a young Sudanese boy whose basketball skills gained him notice and a trip to America where he qualified for a college basketball team。The story fast pace, keeping readers up-to-date with what happens with his family back in Sudan and his developing basketball skills on the court in America。 I found the story wonderful。。。until 5/6 through。 The ending was not really needed and would have been so much sweeter stopping at the 5/6 point。Even still。。。worth the read。 Well written。 Kudos。 。。。more

This was interesting as it was not what I was expecting。 I purchased it as assumed it would the usual John Grisham legal fare。 It's not。 All about a baseball player and I know nothing about baseball at all。 But I stuck with it al really enjoyed it。 This was interesting as it was not what I was expecting。 I purchased it as assumed it would the usual John Grisham legal fare。 It's not。 All about a baseball player and I know nothing about baseball at all。 But I stuck with it al really enjoyed it。 。。。more

Another well written, well plotted novel from the master storyteller, John Grisham。 This one is about South Sudanese basketball player Samuel Sooleyman。 The story is told in an interesting and entertaining way。 I am a college basketball fan (“GO BLUE!!) and that was a big plus。

Cara Sweet

I found the story to be interesting, but the writing did not pull me in the way a Grisham novel usually does。 I love basketball, but even I found many of the details to be excessive and tedious。 The ending threw me off, and not in a good way。 By the last quarter of the book, I was just skimming most of it to get to the end。 I really appreciate it when the author includes information at the end of the book discussing the reality of what was written - I wish Grisham would have included more inform I found the story to be interesting, but the writing did not pull me in the way a Grisham novel usually does。 I love basketball, but even I found many of the details to be excessive and tedious。 The ending threw me off, and not in a good way。 By the last quarter of the book, I was just skimming most of it to get to the end。 I really appreciate it when the author includes information at the end of the book discussing the reality of what was written - I wish Grisham would have included more information after the novel regarding the fighting in Sudan。 (2。5) 。。。more

One of the best stories I’ve read by John Grisham。

Maryann O'connor

I love college basketball … and an underdog too。 Grisham’s storytelling doesn’t disappoint。 Loved it!

Linda Adam

Good read for young adult readers。Given that I am not a big basketball fan, my rating of 2 stars might be low but my main objection is the simplicity of the writing style and story。 I’ve really enjoyed other spots themed novels but this is not one of them。

Marie Sherman

SooleySports fans might enjoy this more at first but it is heartwarming story。 Also makes you realize how lucky you are when so many have nothing。

Lupine Smile

I think this book had a lot more potential than it ended up showing。 The book started to lose its way near the end and characters lost their authenticity。 I enjoyed the book, but I think it could have really knocked my socks off if some of the rough edges had been sanded down。

Karen

Absolutely loved this book and I’m not even a basketball fan。 Heartwarming story

MJ

The first half was Grisham at his normal best。 Part 3 dragged。 This is about scouts going to Africa to bring back potential basketball players。 This is aboutOne players story。

Arlene Rawlinson

Meh。 A bit boring。 Too much detail。 A slog。

Sharon

I really liked Sooley for most of the book, but when the story pivots, it definitely fell flat。 Sooley was a boy who ended up with an opportunity that many dream of but never attain。 The author described a young man who never gave up, who spent hours trying to reach some level of perfection。 The young man at the end of the story just did not match up with the one presented throughout。 Had the last section of the book not existed, I would be singing the praises of Sooley。

Kay Dubs

This is my least favorite Grisham book。 I am a big big fan of his, but this fell flat - it only got 3 stars because it is a Grisham book。
